Site Organisation:

The study part of the site is divided into eight main sections:

There are or rather will be seven units teaching new grammar, vocabulary and functional language each of which contain five lessons. The lessons consist of three sections:

  • Vocabulary and Dialogue introduces the new vocabulary and puts it into some sort of context.
  • The language section explains and expands upon the language introduced in the dialogue.
  • The practice section (to be constructed) provides controlled interactive exercises to help you in your studies.

The eighth part is the pronunciation guide which also contains five parts. Here you will find the pronunciation guide itself as well as information on the Sinhala script and sounds. There are also short videos showing you how to write the letters. You should spend some time studying this section before beginning the lessons. The pronunciation guide and sound files are available free from the Downloads page.

Essential Software:

In order to use the site effectively you need to have the following installed on your system:

  • Real Player - All the streaming sound files are in real media (.rm) format and will only play on the real Player. This is free from real networks and can be downloaded from their site. I have included a link and clear instructions on how to do this on the Downloads page.
  • Adobe Reader - The adobe reader allows you to view adobe portable document format documents. Again this is free from the site.
  • Sinhala Fonts - there are a few instances when I have needed to use Sinhala letters typed directly onto the web pages rather than placed as image files. In order to read these you will need to install the Sinhala fonts onto your system. Detailed instructions along with the fonts are available on the Downloads page.
